Trapped Between RSS Readers

Times

Since I have gotten back into the social side of the internet, I have been debating which RSS Reader I should use.

Sites such as Friendfeed and twitter encourage me to share more links and media with friends. Desktop RSS readers have been great, but most of the sharing features are geared towards email, or sharing on a social news site like digg. I am not big on emailing, and I can’t digg everything that I feel is interesting.

Currently I am using Times RSS reader. It is fairly new, but it has been working quite smooth thus far. The only down side is that it doesn’t keep an archive type list of all of the articles from a certain site. Depending on where I place a feed, I can only see like 3-4 articles from a site. Also, when I add a feed on one computer, I have to remember to add it on my other computer, which has been a hassle.

I used Vienna at one point for a while, but when I got to work, I had no access to these feeds. I happen to work 12 hour shifts! This is what got me contemplating going back to Google reader. The sharing is much easier, and friends can easily check what I am enjoying via my friendfeed or via google reader itself.

I guess this post is mostly my attempt at convincing myself. Part of that is because I paid for the Times RSS reader recently! I wanted to see what others were using though, as I know there may be clients out there that I may have over looked.

What are you using for RSS? If it is google reader, add me! gtalk id - Mr.oberry

I use Netnewswire. Mainly because I can sync my feeds online and then download them to my copy at work. They also have a iPhone client. I’d rather use Google Reader for the IPhone, but there isn’t anyway to sync NetNewswire with it.

Now that is something that I can use, but as you know, I can’t install anything on my work computer, so hopefully it is all online. Big plus about the iPhone client. Google reader (Link to post) has stepped up their iPhone game also. Another reason why I was considering it.

I really like Google Reader. Whether I am at work or at home, its always there for me.

I started with Bloglines, but I kept having connection problems.
Then, I tried Google reader but it was ugly and bleah.
Then, as you know, I tried Streamy. It had some merits, but an odd interface. And it couldn’t export an OPML file.
So finally when Google improved their sharing I went back to Google Reader. It’s still visually ugly, but it works simply and efficiently. I like the way it shares. I’d like more control, to be able to do multiple shares that I could edit more precisely, but overall it works well. So that’s where I’m at.

I am torn between readers at the moment. I am currently using Snikr, Google, Vienna and sometimes Times.

@Shane: Noted on the Vote for Google reader. One of my main gripes with times.

@Heidi: Things have been leaning towards google reader for me. Yeah it is ugly, but I don’t have to worry about syncing anymore, and I can easily track shares and send shares. Only thing is, it is going to take a bit of work to add people who use google reader.

@Peety: Same! I stopped using vienna and used Mail.app RSS for a while (sucked), and I plan on keeping Times around on my mobile PC when I switch back to google reader.

Google Reader is great, it has Google Gears for offline/sync, the latest http://www.google.com/reader/i is a nice web client for the phone. As a complement, I use http://snackr.net/ as an rss ticker for the desktop (AIR app). They don’t have a sync between Reader and Snackr just yet, but export the OPML from Reader into Snackr works great.

Hi Jeff. I downloaded snackr becuase I liked the streaming on the desktop. I didn’t install it yet, but the reports I heard were that it was a fun little app. I will be surely be using the new google reader version for the iPhone when I get one. I already imported my feeds into google reader, and I have been using Times as well. Add snackr and I should be set. :D
