Well, Apple Gave Us What We Wanted. Sort Of.
The 5th has come and gone. Easily, it has become one of the best iPod releases to date. The long awaited iPod touch has finally landed. Since the introduction of the iPhone, EVERY Apple lover has been hoping for an iPhone WITHOUT the phone. It seems Steve Jobs has been listening.
Most of you that have been checking out ob81.com a while know that I have been waiting. We finally got the new “Fat” nano as expected. The new iPod Touch was highly expected also. The classic kind of caught me off guard, but I was expecting an iPod with 160gb capacity.
Like most of you, I followed a live update of the event, and as each new product was released, the excitement reached new heights. New nano revealed, sold. Classic iPod revealed with 160gb!! Sold. iTouch revealed!! Sold! Wait a minute, only 16gb? Questionable.
The iPod touch comes with so many other features, it almost looks like a mini PDA type device that happens to play music and videos better than any other PDA EVER. Here’s the thing though. That 16gb is going to be more like 11 or 12 when you turn it on. The most avid of iPod users will buy this device, but the most avid users tend to have 30-60gb of music alone. Now add video to that.
This will surely create a big hassle with buyers, but I figure the issue will be rectified with a higher capacity iTouch in the near future.
I mainly use my iPod in the gym, and I doubt I would take an iTouch there, so I am stuck wondering how and where I would use it. The wifi with safari included is a HUGE plus. If wifi wasn’t included, I wouldn’t even consider the iTouch at this point.
We have all witnessed the tons of apps made for the iPhone taking advantage of the wifi, and I expect the same will be done with the iTouch. This is a big plus for a potential buy as well. If I keep my 60gb iPod with Video in play, I just may be able to justify getting an iTouch.
But wait! The iPhone is now the same price as the iTouch, so yet another dilemma is reached. While chatting on pownce, I noticed that a lot of the non- US Apple lovers said that they were straight up going for the iTouch. Which makes sense, as they have only seen an iPhone on TV. Some of the US Apple lovers on the other hand, were contemplating going with the iPhone, as this would be the complete package, and would surely limit the amount of devices you were carrying around. The difference in space is minimal considering that to own an iTouch, most users will have to cut their music and videos down 90% in order to get their favorites on it.
As with every Apple event, I am stuck with tons of decisions that seem to all evaporate immediately upon arrival at the Apple store. Despite its drawbacks, I know that once I get my hands on that iTouch, the iPod Classic is going to look like a baby.
Which new product are you getting?

I think the phone is the best choice, because it reduces the amount gadgets you have to carry. However many people are addicted to they’re Blackberries, so for them the Ipod Touch is the obvious choice. I cant imagine why anyone would want a Classic, unless you need a portable HD/boot disk, i think Apple is going to phase them out quickly, they are not going to sell well. The Nanos ….. They could be useful for working out, and they have amazing portability, these are going to bring portable video to the massrs
