Well, Apple Gave Us What We Wanted. Sort Of.

The 5th has come and gone. Easily, it has become one of the best iPod releases to date. The long awaited iPod touch has finally landed. Since the introduction of the iPhone, EVERY Apple lover has been hoping for an iPhone WITHOUT the phone. It seems Steve Jobs has been listening.

Most of you that have been checking out ob81.com a while know that I have been waiting. We finally got the new “Fat” nano as expected. The new iPod Touch was highly expected also. The classic kind of caught me off guard, but I was expecting an iPod with 160gb capacity.

Like most of you, I followed a live update of the event, and as each new product was released, the excitement reached new heights. New nano revealed, sold. Classic iPod revealed with 160gb!! Sold. iTouch revealed!! Sold! Wait a minute, only 16gb? Questionable.

The New iPod Line-Up

The iPod touch comes with so many other features, it almost looks like a mini PDA type device that happens to play music and videos better than any other PDA EVER. Here’s the thing though. That 16gb is going to be more like 11 or 12 when you turn it on. The most avid of iPod users will buy this device, but the most avid users tend to have 30-60gb of music alone. Now add video to that.

This will surely create a big hassle with buyers, but I figure the issue will be rectified with a higher capacity iTouch in the near future.

I mainly use my iPod in the gym, and I doubt I would take an iTouch there, so I am stuck wondering how and where I would use it. The wifi with safari included is a HUGE plus. If wifi wasn’t included, I wouldn’t even consider the iTouch at this point.

We have all witnessed the tons of apps made for the iPhone taking advantage of the wifi, and I expect the same will be done with the iTouch. This is a big plus for a potential buy as well. If I keep my 60gb iPod with Video in play, I just may be able to justify getting an iTouch.

But wait! The iPhone is now the same price as the iTouch, so yet another dilemma is reached. While chatting on pownce, I noticed that a lot of the non- US Apple lovers said that they were straight up going for the iTouch. Which makes sense, as they have only seen an iPhone on TV. Some of the US Apple lovers on the other hand, were contemplating going with the iPhone, as this would be the complete package, and would surely limit the amount of devices you were carrying around. The difference in space is minimal considering that to own an iTouch, most users will have to cut their music and videos down 90% in order to get their favorites on it.

As with every Apple event, I am stuck with tons of decisions that seem to all evaporate immediately upon arrival at the Apple store. Despite its drawbacks, I know that once I get my hands on that iTouch, the iPod Classic is going to look like a baby.

Which new product are you getting?

SO far, I am impressed by the new ipods.

However, can only give an honest review when I get my dirty little hands on one - which will be soon, hopefully!!

I think the phone is the best choice, because it reduces the amount gadgets you have to carry. However many people are addicted to they’re Blackberries, so for them the Ipod Touch is the obvious choice. I cant imagine why anyone would want a Classic, unless you need a portable HD/boot disk, i think Apple is going to phase them out quickly, they are not going to sell well. The Nanos ….. They could be useful for working out, and they have amazing portability, these are going to bring portable video to the massrs

@Peety: I love them all! But I have to choose 1 or 2. :D

@Phogasmic: Joey, you make a good point man. Most people who have blackberries own iPods also. They won’t be switching to AT&T anytime soon, so will be drawn to the iTouch. I can see people getting the Classic. 160gb is hard to turn down. Just think, most people we know bought the 60gb iPod with Video. Its going to be hard to shave most of your collection so it can fit on the iTouch.

I think that a 16GB iPhone would be the best choice!

However, there are many other great mobile phones, most people don’t want to be bound to one carrier (AT&T in the US) or switch just for the jesus phone, and it isn’t even out in Europe yet (that’s where I live)!
Also the data plans are far too expensive for the European market! Over here most people are used to pay about $10-$20/month for their subscriptions and to get price cuts on the phones that they buy! A huge percentage of the European market even uses prepaid cards, which isn’t possible with the iPhone at the moment!

For Europe, I think that the iPod Touch is the best choice!

The 16GB model is just fine! Don’t hate about storage capacity!!!
Look at how thin and rad the gadget is! You won’t need more than 16GB for your favorite music, movies, and pictures!!!
I’ve got an iTunes music library of about 100GB, but I only listen to a rather small percentage of the songs!
Just organize your songs in smart playlists (recently played, most played, most stars, favorites) and put these on your iPod!
There will be tons of free space left for vids an pics!

If you want to carry around your whole music collection, you should probably stick with the iPod Classic (up to 160GB)!

Oh yeah, I don’t like the new colors! Red and black are fine but the others omfg! The designer(s) should be punished! Put I suppose that that’s “affaire de goût”, up to everyone’s taste!

Cheers!

I just wish the touch had the email application from the iPhone, then it would definately be what I would pick up.

What I want is a 200GB Touch. I love the phone, a friend has one and I’ve played with it a lot, but the service plan with AT&T is expensive and I’m not sure that I really need to be able to surf the Web on my phone.

If I had the iPhone I’d still carry around my 5thGen 60Gb iPod because I keep it pretty full with music, podcasts and videos. I also keep a few photo albums on it, use it as a portable hard drive and have even recorded a podcast on it using the Belkin microphone. It pretty much does exactly what I want it to do and would only be better with more space and a spiffier interface. While the classic looks great, it’s not quite enough better for me to buy it just yet, I think I’ll wait for the next generation.

But whatever else it may do I don’t need it to take pictures or brew coffee. I have other tools for that.

@starboy: I was talking to another Euro iPhone hopeful, and he mentioned the price plans for phone service over there. I am wondering if Apple lowered the price so that it wouldn’t be so steep when it hit Europe. You do have a point about how much music iPod owners actually listen to. I may make a iTouch play list or something. I will need a few shows on there as well, not The Office sadly :(

@jdantzlerw: You never know. :) People have bene making loads of apps for the iPhone.

@Heidi: lol a 200gb iTouch would be a dream come true right now. Yeah, I don’t need the iTouch taking pictures and all of that crap. For the price, I wouldn’t have been mad if it was there though. I don’t think that I can wait for the next generation. Thats a year away! I may get the iTouch and keep my 5G on the hip full of videos.

I can see where Apple is coming from by not having a larger amount of memory.

Firstly, the iPod Touch doesn’t have a hard disk hard drive, so it will last longer in battery life. It also runs faster.

Secondly, now that Apple offers video in the iTunes store, they know that it has come to a point where people have many gigs of content. Most people will only listen/watch a couple of gigs of content in one day, so there isn’t really a reason to carry your 200 gigabyte music collection.

I liked having all of my collection on my iPod, but I never used it. I’m alright with the lower memory.

it would be nice if the itouch actually came up as a external hard drive on ‘My Computer’ for those of us who have to constantly back up our work. All the other ipods do….so why not this version?
When i plug it in to a computer elsewhere it comes up with ‘Open Appliaction with Microsoft scanner?’ i’m like wtf…And you can’t even drag-drop files onto it
