iPhone Unlocked- For a price?

unlocked-iphone.jpg

Am I the only person that finds it ironic that someone has unlocked the iPhone, but you have to BUY the software? I am sure they won’t mind it when I download the software for free via torrent.

They are pro open source right?

People have been busting the iPhone wide open recently and some of the prices are listed between $25-50. I remember when people worked hard on unlocking something so the geek masses could enjoy the benefit of flexibility, and not being locked in to certain providers.

iPhonesimfree.com list the following benefits of buying their software:

  • Choose the provider you want, use any SIM card from any network provider in any country
  • No more outrageous roaming charges.
  • Save Money! A favorable exchange rate makes for excellent value.

Umm, where is the free part guys?

Don’t get me wrong, I am all for supporting hackers in a donation type deal, but it is a little backwards to unlock something, and then LOCK people into paying to exercise the unlock. I am definitely going to get an iPhone now.

I will be visiting my favorite torrent site though, which I know is cool with these guys.

Thanks iPhonesimfree.com!!

LOL - No iphone for me..The camera part is a no show.. I rather wait for the new ipod you mentioned earlier.. If it is the same as the phone only missing the phone and camera part then I am happy.. Of course it has to have wifi like the psp..

And yes people will do anything for a buck.. Selling cracked software should be illegal? But maybe I am old fashion…

Have a wonderful week-end Howard!

Open source is about development, not free software. Regardless, I think guys who put in the time and effort for something like that are entitled a little bit of recompse for their efforts: http://thenewsroom.com/details/633981?c_id=wom-bc-js

If people did all this work and didn’t get anything back for it they may not do the work in the first place and therefore no product and no discussion on the cost of the product…

I would imagine even if a torrent version is downloadable, these guys will have the knowhow to make their Software copy protected.

Free is for me. I would give a donation for a job well done to the team of dudes that did the work. I will NOT give money to someone exploiting it…

When you find the torrent stop on by http://www.askTheAdmin.com and let us know. Thanks.

To be honest I don’t really care (or want) my iPhone unlocked. I am using verizon right now, but if I ever decide I want an iPhone, I will be happy with switching to at&t? I don’t see how it’s a big deal other than they cracked a revolutionary and popular phone.

I couldn’t understand why Apple would try to lock people into AT&T but maybe this is the answer. I just hope some real hackers put out a true open source solution, probably a matter of time!

I think uniquephones wouldn’t have run afoul of the legal issues quite as fast if they would have released the code for free. Maybe put up some kind of donation link or some advertising. The idea of them profiting i think it the issue.

I haven’t heard a lot of threats coming the way of the teen who first unlocked the phone.

Anyway, it is easier to ask for forgiveness than permission, which is what happened when uniquephone announced that it was going to be selling it. They should have just put it up on their site the day they were selling and not had the whole lead up.
