You won’t get me this time Apple!

With the sun rising on yet another Tuesday, I commence my normal Tuesday morning ritual: Ctrl+T. www.apple.com. Refresh.

You see, I’m waiting. What am I waiting for? Good question. I am waiting for the next Apple product. I say product, because I am particularly in the market for a Mac Pro and a new iPod. I want these items. I need these items. I won’t buy them until I see that fresh title on Apple.com: “All-New Mac Pro. Power is Beautiful” or some equally simplified title that draws me into checking out the details.

I haven’t always been like this. I mean, who can keep up with the latest and greatest products EVERY time? You need some new tech gear, get it now right? Its going to be old in a few months anyway. I doubt even Bill Gates has the latest gadgets in his home.

So what. I’m waiting.

Ahhhh, I can still remember that day. That first day I brought my iMac G5 home. It was the new one with the iSight built in. A wonderful day it was. I was instantly sucked in to the whole ‘Apple Cult” deal, and went online surfing for other Mac users to spend the rest of my internet life with. I was in love with my Mac.

Then Intel came. Suddenly, my iMac wasn’t as cool anymore for some reason. My version had just been released, but already they have a completely new iMac that makes my iMac obsolete! Whatever though, like I said, you can’t keep up with technology. I went on with my life. Making short films. Making photo slide show DVD’s for family and friends. Then windows happened.

I had enough at this point. I immediately went into a frenzy to sell my iMac as quickly as possible before it was worth near nothing. I managed to sell it for $100 bucks less than what I bought it for. Then BAM!, here comes the Macbook. PERFECT. I had fresh cash in my pocket and a smile as I walked into the Apple store in Tokyo and grabbed a spanking new Blackbook. Yes. The speed on this baby is even faster than my iMac was! Yes. My life was complete.

I would take the Blackbook to work and show it off. Logging into Windows. Smacking my computer to change operating systems. All while maintaining a subtle grin as my friends were wow’d by my new laptop and its features. I was the MAN. I even convinced a few friends to “go Mac”. Then guess what. A new Macbook came after about a month of me purchasing, and had a bigger HD, Dual Layer DVD burning, AND it was faster! OH MY GOD. To top it off, this is the unit that my friends picked up. Sigh.
That was the breaking point.

Time went by and one day I decided that I wanted to get back into the desktop scene. The Mac Pro was the likely choice because it is pretty upgradeable, and there is nothing like that raw power, and throwing 1 or 2 wide screen monitors on your desk. I did my research, and saw that the new Mac Pro was nearly a year old, and the last “update” was only an addition of a non-true 8-core chip.

I decided I would wait.

This was sometime near the first week of June. I am still waiting.

I started this waiting with many other noble members on a forums I follow. Some of us couldn’t hack it, and gave in to the sneaky Apple and their pretty pictures.

A few rock hard hopefuls are still standing though. Still holding on.
I’m going to make it. I will be damned if Apple gets me this time. I will make it.

I wish I could plant a microphone on Steve Jobs. Then I would know when everything was coming out.

Hilarious. I am actually a semi Mac cult newb, having had work order me my first mac book pro which hopefully will be arriving in the next week or so.

my wife has a macbook and we’ve got about three different ipods in the house … but that’s the extent of our “culthood”. i, of course, would LOVE to get an iphone. but that’s not happening for at least another year.

but i do like to keep my eye on when things will be updated. macrumors.com has a decent buyers guide that shows when things were last updated and when they may be likely to be updated again (based on past trends) - http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/

@ Lor3n: Then all my problems would be solved, and I could go on with life!

@William: You are going to fall in love man. Trust me.

@TJ: Don’t we all! I may pass on the iPhone though, or postpone it for a while.

That buyers guide on Macrumors is my first stop when considering Apple products :D

Don’t you mean Cmd-T?

ob81 July 25th, 2007 at 9:57 am

Hey coolfactor! I do most of my refreshing when I show up to work :D Maybe one day my job will go with Mac Pros or something. :)

It’s funny to see people turning all sorts of things into religions.
It’s funny to see these same people bashing ‘old skool’ religions or calling themselves agnostic. Steve Job should really consider founding a church to accomodate it’s ever growing mass of zombie childish-plastic-product followers… :-P

this happened when I bought my powerbook. I bought it in the november, and I couldn’t wait til January when i KNEW that the macbook was coming out. It was one of the ones with the dodgy screen - i knew this and STILL bought it. ah the regret.

Douglas Jarquin July 25th, 2007 at 6:43 pm

This brought me back. The exact same thing happened/is happening to me. The only differnce is that my MacBook is white and I am waiting for Leopard in October.

ob81 July 26th, 2007 at 6:19 am

lol Jasper Happens to the best of us. Makes you think a little longer before you buy your next product also.

@Douglas- At least we know when Leopard will be here! Now if we had info on every Mac product in advance….

Look at you Howard, after just over a week, your blog is already quite successful. Just look at all these comments. You should feel pretty accomplished. Good news though, The 6g iPod is *supposed* to come out aug. 7th, or sometime around there. But remember, nothing is set in stone yet.

ob81 July 30th, 2007 at 12:23 pm

A lot of hard work Truman, a lot. Not even half way there yet. :h)
Yeah I figure that the 6G “may” come out on the 7th. Hopefully at least. One never knows with Apple. :D

Lawrence Job August 19th, 2007 at 3:03 pm

Sixth generation iPods coming up…

You can tell because the shops are showing stock drops. I’d say September/october but, this goes with your last comment - Steve jobs is likely to hold it back just to mess with us.. if anyone would.. it would be him.. :D
